MEEKER — Tyler Montgomery from Las Vegas, Nev., is only 13-years-old, but he was asked to play in the 15-18 age group at the junior golf tournament held last week at the Meeker Golf Course.
“He kind of surprised me when he asked to be bumped up an age division,” Meeker golf manager Darrin Rohn said about Montgomery. “He’s a good kid.”
Montgomery was the best golf on the course in a field of 43 participants, competing in four age divisions for girls and boys. Montgomery shot a two-over par 70 to win the oldest division, giving Meeker’s Brock Campbell second, 12 strokes back and Austin Edinger finished third with an 86.
Meeker’s Tristen Rohn won the boys 5-7 division with a gross score of 18 after three holes of play. Jace Derryberry was second, one stroke back and Meeker’s Cole Rogers was third and Alex Rohn finished fourth. Meeker’s Addie Joy was second in the girls bracket of the same age group, which was won by Masi Smith. Kathie Norell finished third. Jacob Smith won the boys 8-11 age group with a 23 after six holes, while Tristen Tonozzi and Spencer Gendreau tied at 31 and Greg Rohn finished fourth with a 32. Ellie Walters of Rifle won the girls 8-11 division and McKenzie Montgomery was second.
Rifle players dominated the boys and girls, 12-14 age divisions, with Taylor Walters winning and teammate Alyx Carter finishing second. Rifle’s Kyler Smith won the boys division, Aspen’s Omir Gildor was second, Rifle’s Teit Haur third and Meeker’s J.J. Wyatt fourth.
