MEEKER | The Cowboys traveled to Parachute and took on Grand Valley as their final opponent for 2020.
The girls opened the night against the Cardinals who came out early and were up by three, 11-14 was the score at the end of the first quarter. After an excellent second quarter for the girls, they went into the locker room down by two, 24-26. In the third quarter the team hit a dry spell and only sank one basket; their efforts in the fourth brought them back to within six, but they couldn’t pull out the win.
Sarah Kracht led the lady Cowboys for the evening with four, three-point goals, rounding out her evening with 14 on the boards. Matilda Brown and Hallie Knowles had a combined effort of 14 more points and the three girls led the team offensively.
Defensively Julia Dinwiddie, Brown and Knowles brought in 18 boards, with Dinwiddie leading the way. The lady Cowboys are now 4-2 and have outscored their opponents 294 to 192, but with this loss the Cowboys dropped in the Colorado High School Activity Associate (CHSAA) RPI and are now ranked 20 in class 2A.
The boys took to the courts next. “We did not shoot well in the first quarter,” commented head coach Klark Kindler. Trailing by five out of the gates, the Cowboys fell a little further behind in the second and at the half it was 21-34 the Cardinals.
“We would catch up to within 6-7 points,” said Kindler, “then they would pull way ahead again.”
Cole Rogers, who has taken on the primary leadership role, according to Kindler, led the team with 22 points, nine in three-point goals.
“I feel like we have become much more cohesive as a team from the beginning of the season,” said Kindler, “Rogers hit some big shots for us and Spud White is doing a good job inside, just need to keep him out of foul trouble.”
White, who had 16 points on the evening, was part of the rebound dual with Lane Anderson, each had nine defensively and two offensively.
The final score of the game was 61-50 and the Cowboys’ record is now 1-4.
Meeker will host Little Snake River on Jan 4, at this time both JV and varsity are scheduled but stay tuned to the Jan. 2 edition for any changes.
