Panthers run in Utah

The Rangely High School track and field team traveled to Vernal, Utah for the Uintah Invitational meet and then to Grand Junction for Palisade’s annual Frank Woodburn meet last weekend. Even though the Uintah meet was not a state-qualifying meet, since it was not in Colorado, it was still a great opportunity to get the experience of another meet under their belts.
Marie Morton had another successful meet, bringing home a first-place medal in discus with a throw of 96 feet 4 inches.
Four Panther athletes, William Scoggins, Devin Williams, Dale Nielsen and Tanner Nielsen, entered into our first 4×400-meter relay of the season. They all ran very well and earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 4 minutes, 12 seconds.
Several other meet highlights were Cole Barlow’s fourth-place finish in the 200 dash with a time of 24.11, William Scoggin’s sixth-place finish in the 800 run with a time of 2:23.19 and Victoria Phelan’s third-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 14-1 1/2.
Because last weekend was prom for Rangely High School, only eight freshman and sophomore athletes attended Palisade’s meet in Grand Junction.
“Even though we had a small team there were quite a few successful moments,” head coach Stephanie Kahler said.
Andrew Morton reached another personal record with a high jump of 5-8. Holly Lepro competed in her first meet of the season after a knee injury that occurred playing volleyball. She threw the shot put 30-10 1/2 at the meet, which was a state-qualifying third-place throw and her personal record.
William Scoggins, Dale Neilsen and Tanner Neilsen earned personal records for the season in the 1600 run with times of 5:18, 5:26, and 5:28, respectively. Also, Aimee Hogan ran a strong 100-meter hurdles in 19.91 seconds and Chris Staley (13.58), Colton Coombs (12.22) and Connor Phelan (12.66) all ran personal record 100-meter dashes.
The Panthers will compete in Coal Ridge Friday and Glenwood Springs Saturday.
