Rangely Hurricanes take state championship

matt scoggins For a fourth year in a row, the Rangely Hurricanes won the state championship meet held in Craig. Members of the team were Makenze Cochrane, Geli Brown, Korrynn Wenzel, Andrew Morton, Justin Prosser (with trophy), Kelsey Prosser, Andrew and Patrick Scoggins.

RANGELY I The Rangely Hurricanes swim team won its fourth straight state championship at the Scottie Aschermann Memorial Seasonal Club championship meet held in Craig. The meet is designed for small teams in which year-round swimmers do not participate. To be able to swim in the meet, athletes can only compete nine months out of the year and must attain a qualifying mark for each event. The Hurricanes took eight swimmers to compete in 58 events against swimmers from throughout the state representing a total of 22 teams. Rangely team members were Justin Prosser (18), William Scoggins (16), Kelsey Prosser (16), Andrew Morton (15), Geli Brown (13), Patrick Scoggins (11), Korrynn Wenzel (10) and Makenze Cochrane (10). All the swimmers had outstanding races and improved their personal bests in nearly every race. Highlights included a second place finish by Justin Prosser in the 100 meter breaststroke in a time of 1:20.91, a fourth place finish in the 200 breaststroke, fifth place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 50 breaststroke and several other strong finishes, including a third place finish as part of the relay team. William Scoggins had a seventh place finish in the 200 back, several other strong finishes and was part of the third place relay team.  Kelsey Prosser finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke, fifth in the 200 breaststroke and had several other strong finishes, including a fifth place finish as part of the relay team. Morton finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.60, finished fourth in the 200 backstroke and had several other strong finishes including a third place finish as part of the relay team. Brown was the seasonal club state champion in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, finished third in the 200 IM and 400 IM, fifth in the 400, 100 and 50 freestyle, and had several other strong finishes including a fifth place finish with the relay team. Wenzel had some very good races knocking off time left and right and was part of the fifth place relay team. Cochrane finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke and had several other strong finishes including a fifth place finish as part of the relay team.Patrick Scoggins was the overall seasonal club state champion for the boys 11-12 age group, earning high point honors. On his way to this award he was the state champion in six events including the 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 IM. He earned second place finishes in the 200 freestyle, 50 fly, 200 IM, 400 freestyle and was part of the third place relay team. This was his third time in four years to earn this award at the state meet.Four straight state championships in a row is something for the Hurricanes, and Rangely, to be proud of.
