RANGELY I The Rangely High School girls’ basketball team picked up a win on Saturday, beating Hotchkiss, 38-24.
Coach Quinton Kent said, “We knew coming into this game that we needed to win to keep our playoff hopes alive, and I was pleased with the way our girls responded.”
The girls came out Saturday playing outstanding defense as they held Hotchkiss to six points in the first quarter and just ten total points at halftime.
Kent said, “I challenged them to keep Hotchkiss under 10 points each quarter, which they did.”
Rangely was led by Katelyn Brown with 12 points, Desiree Coombs had 11, Katye Allred had nine points and 10 rebounds while Simone Heinle had four points. Lindzey Thacker added a basket and pulled down eight rebounds in the game.
Rangely had a big fourth quarter to come away with a 14-point win.
Kent said, “It was a good team win and although it doesn’t guarantee us a playoff spot in the district tournament, it puts us in a good position to get one.”
On Friday night, the team played Cedaredge and found scoring very difficult against the well-balanced Bruins
Cedaredge jumped to a 13-2 first-quarter lead and the Bruins were up by 20 at the half.
Rangely had a great fourth quarter and actually outscored their opponents in the second half, but they couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
Kent said, “There is a reason Cedaredge is the top seed in our league and ranked No. 5 in the state. They have really good balance on offense and they play great team defense.”
Katelyn Brown once again led scorers with 17 points, followed by Katye Allred with nine points. Allred also led rebounders with five.
The team played Meeker on Tuesday night.
Post season is just around the corner for the Panthers, who came off the weekend with some confidence, looking to build some momentum to finish strong.
