Cowboys’ season, playoff hopes end

MEEKER I It wasn’t the finish they hoped for, but in spite of a lopsided loss to end the season, the Cowboys can still hold their heads high. “With all the injuries and young players playing at the end of the year, 5-4 (the team’s final record) was probably about as well as we could […]

Senior football players, including from left Jared Frantz, Ryan Wix, Victor Villalpando, Alema Atoafa and Trevor Matrisciano, honored their parents before last Friday’s homecoming game.

MEEKER I It’s down to a one-game season. Even then, the Cowboys will need some help. “We had to beat Hayden (to qualify for the playoffs),” Meeker football coach Jeff Palmer said. “Now we have to beat Hotchkiss. That would look really good on our resume for a wild-card berth.”

MEEKER I It didn’t take long for first-year football coach Jeff Palmer to figure out the cross-county rivalry with Rangely was a big deal. Like before he even was hired. “When I was getting interviewed, they said you either beat Rangely or get fired,” Palmer said. “They said it and laughed, but I think it […]

Cowboys rope Center 43-20

Alema Atoafa rushed for 170 yards, scored four touchdowns, recorded seven tackles and forced and recovered a fumble in Saturday’s 43-20 win against Center. “He had a monster game,” coach Jeff Palmer said of the senior captain. “He did a little bit of everything.”

MEEKER I Game three of this football season was a lot like game one for the Cowboys. They won big. And they shut down the other team in the process. Playing their second Saturday game of the season — they will play their last one this Saturday against the Fruita Monument junior varsity — the […]

Cole Steiner prepared to haul in one of his four catches. Two of those receptions went for touchdowns as Meeker routed Grand Junction High School’s junior varsity 41-24 in Saturday’s season opener.

MEEKER I First game of the season. First-year coach. First varsity experience for many of the starters. First-game jitters? No way. Meeker, which lost six all-conference players from last season’s 8-3 team, showed Saturday the Cowboys still have plenty of firepower.

Stick a fork in Rams, Meeker wins 52-9 over Roaring Fork

Sophomore Toby Casias, who scored Meeker’s final touchdown in the varsity game against Roaring Fork, follows his blockers during a junior varsity game against Hayden on Monday. The Cowboys won, 18-0.
