The Meeker Cowboys used a total team effort to subdue Friday’s opponent.

j.c. watt Meeker junior quarterback Nate Walsh drops back to pass in a loss last Saturday in Monte Vista to the Mustangs. Walsh completed 13 of 22 passing attempts for a 158 yards. The Cowboys will play Center this Saturday on Olathe’s neutral field, with the kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.

MEEKER I The Cowboys are getting off to a slow start in 2011. The team, with only five seniors, seems to improve on some parts of the game each week, but has slipped in others.

RBC football teams open seasons on the road

RBC I Rio Blanco County’s two high school football teams were at Grand Valley High School last Saturday for scrimmages against each other, Cedaredge and the hosting Cardinals.

Classic benefits MHS team

bobby gutierrez Norbert Boes stands next to Meeker High School’s new football coach Ron Dupree. Boes teamed up with Dr. James Jex and Gary Stewart to win the annual Kickoff Classic golf scramble at the Meeker Golf Course with a six-under par 62. Football practice started Monday, Aug. 15.

MEEKER I Ron Dupree, Meeker High School’s new football coach, does not play golf but he learned some things about the game after hosting the annual Kickoff Classic golf scramble last Saturday at the Meeker Golf Course.

Cowboys hire new coach

MEEKER I Ron Dupree will take the helm of the Meeker High School football team this fall and the veteran football coach already has a list of all the boys registered in the school with their years, the heights and weights of many, how fast they can run 20 and 40 yards and how many […]

Up and Down El Rio Blanco: Show time!

The Rio Blanco County fair is always one of my favorite events to attend and to photograph. Lots of kids, all hustling, smiling, wet and muddy, while preparing for show time.

Cowboys’ season, playoff hopes end

MEEKER I It wasn’t the finish they hoped for, but in spite of a lopsided loss to end the season, the Cowboys can still hold their heads high. “With all the injuries and young players playing at the end of the year, 5-4 (the team’s final record) was probably about as well as we could […]

Cowboys need win, help in playoff push

Senior football players, including from left Jared Frantz, Ryan Wix, Victor Villalpando, Alema Atoafa and Trevor Matrisciano, honored their parents before last Friday’s homecoming game.

MEEKER I It’s down to a one-game season. Even then, the Cowboys will need some help. “We had to beat Hayden (to qualify for the playoffs),” Meeker football coach Jeff Palmer said. “Now we have to beat Hotchkiss. That would look really good on our resume for a wild-card berth.”

Cowboys can secure playoff spot with homecoming win

MEEKER I It didn’t take long for first-year football coach Jeff Palmer to figure out the cross-county rivalry with Rangely was a big deal. Like before he even was hired. “When I was getting interviewed, they said you either beat Rangely or get fired,” Palmer said. “They said it and laughed, but I think it […]

Cowboys blanked by league foe Paonia

MEEKER I It’s a stretch to compare the Sports Illustrated cover jinx to the Colorado Preps. However, as far as the Cowboys varsity football is concerned the two may be in tandem.

Cowboys keep on rolling with Lake County win

Sidelined players, from left, Trevor Matrisciano, Toby Casias, Justin Hardy (on crutches) and Kevin Eli all sat out last Friday’s game against Lake County. Matrisciano, Casias and Hardy are out for the season because of injuries.

MEEKER I Racking up big numbers hasn’t been the goal this season. Winning games is the goal. The Cowboys have been doing both. Two weeks ago, Meeker set its high mark for scoring for the season with a 50-19 win over the Class 5A Fruita Monument junior varsity.

Cowboys roll to another big win

Meeker quarterback Trevor Matrisciano’s senior season is over after he suffered a knee injury in last week’s game.

Atoafa, Nieslanik have big games as Meeker defeats Fruita JV 50-19 MEEKER I Three Saturday games. Three wins. And not just wins, but dominating wins. Yes, Saturdays have been good to the Cowboys. Or, the Cowboys have been good on Saturdays. Really good.
