MEEKER | The Meeker High School boys wrestling team competed in the 48th annual Warrior Classic Tournament this past weekend, hosted by Central High School. The Cowboys brought eight wrestlers to the tournament and finished 19th out of 30 teams, with a total score of 55.5 team points.
Two Meeker wrestlers earned podium finishes at the Warrior Classic this year. Sophomore Koy Weber, who is ranked fifth in Class 2A Region 2 at 132 pounds, placed sixth. Reflecting on his performance, Weber expressed pride in his progress that he has had this season.
“I am very proud of how I competed at the Warrior. It was definitely the best that I have done yet, and I have made so much improvement from last season,” Weber said.
Weber started strong, winning his first match against Blaze Unpingco of Canon City. After a scoreless first period, Weber was reversed in the second, falling behind 2-0. In the third period, he chose neutral, secured a takedown, and won the match 3-2. He described his semifinal match as his most challenging.
“My most challenging match of the tournament was my semifinals match. This is because I knew the kid was good going into the match and I had a long time to prepare for it, so keeping a straight mind and knowing I could compete with him was one of the most challenging parts,” Weber said.
Senior Cade Blunt, who is currently ranked first in Class 2A Region 2 at 175 pounds, also had a standout performance. Blunt began the tournament with a dominant win over Santiago Gonzales of Farmington, pinning him in 1:47 in the second period after building a 3-0 lead with a takedown.
Blunt would finish the tournament third overall and discussed the mental toughness required during his third place match. He explained how he felt about his overall performance in the tournament and what he plans to take away from it.
“My third-and fourth-place match was the most mentally tough match just because I thought that I should have been wrestling in the finals. However, a loss always helps me get my mind back to normal and keeps me working harder,” Blunt said.
The Meeker boys wrestling team will take a short break before heading to Kremmling on Jan. 4, 2025, to compete in the West Grand Tournament.
Good luck to the Cowboys and all Meeker sports teams and as always, Go Cowboys!
