MEEKER I Meeker Cowboys softball has a new head coach. Kendal Bergman, who worked as an assistant coach previously with the Cowboys, joined the team this year as their new head coach. This year Eric Brown will serve as her main assistant coach and Tom Knowles and Crandall Mergelman will be volunteer coaches.
Bergman has 15 girls out this year, pulling from Meeker, Rangely and Craig.
“There will be lots of girls getting both JV and varsity experience, and it will be good for our team, eventually we will have to start tracking innings, but until then, the girls will get a lot of playing time.”
There are three returning seniors from Meeker — Macy Ridgeway, MyKayla Wille and Hailey Knowles — plus one senior from Rangely, Kenlie Jewell. Ridgeway, Wille and Knowles have played softball all four years and this is Jewell’s second year on the team.
The Cowboys are looking forward to their first matchup on Aug. 20 when they travel to Rifle for a JV and varsity doubleheader, and then the following day at 11 a.m. the JV and varsity will take to the field in Palisade. The first home game for the Cowboys will be the following Saturday, Aug. 28, when Cedaredge comes to Meeker, games to begin at 11 a.m.
