Hunting seasons off to a good start in RBC region
RBC I The hunting seasons for elk and deer are off to a good start, but weather uncertainty raises a few questions about the upcoming rifle hunts, Colorado Parks and Wildlife area game manager Bill de Vergie said in Meeker on Monday.
Search and rescue sent out twice
RBC I The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that the county’s search and rescue team has been deployed twice on back-county missions in the past week. Both calls were to the area of the Buford-New Castle Road and the intersection of county roads 10 and 17.

Hunting looks like it will be a successful season for the innkeepers, motels and lodges in the Rangely and Meeker areas over the next six weeks as most owners and managers say they are in good shape as far as hunters filling their rooms.
Shell Oil pulls all three R&D leases in Rio Blanco County
RBC I In a surprise move, Shell Oil announced last week that it will be shutting down its research and development in the upper Piceance Basin area of Rio Blanco County, southeast of Rangely.
Sanderson Park…
Several hundred persons attended Saturday’s dedication of Sanderson Park in Meeker, where races, games, playground equipment and free food in the form of bratwursts, wraps, veggie burgers and other goodies were well utilized by those in attendance.
Trees are a’changing…
The trees that are changing colors already at higher elevations are definitely still in the minority, but these aspens, about five miles east of Buford on Saturday, indicate that the great fall color show is approaching.
Pheasant along the road…
This male ring-necked pheasant appeared a little out of place at mile marker 38 high up on County Road 8 on Saturday. A pair of unconcerned males was walking quite unconcerned up one side of the road about a mile past Missouri Creek. Usually, pheasants are not considered high-altitude birds.
