Blast and Twang 4-H contests kick off Rio Blanco County Fair

RBC | The 2024 County Shoot is in the books. Friday the air shooting classes began the RBC Fair at the 4-H building in Meeker. Unofficial results indicate all 4-H shooters are likely eligible to go on to the Colorado State Fair! The next day, archers, shotgunners and .22 shooters met in Rangely. A full day of shooting and scoring also indicated a large percentage of 4-H shooters may have the State Fair on their horizon. All of these exhibitors also have to enter their projects in the 4-H General projects for public viewing.

This weekend’s events start Friday with the Open Ranch Horse Show at the fairgrounds arena, the Cake Decorating Contest and the Fashion Revue at Meeker High School, and the popular Team Roping at the fairgrounds arena in Meeker. Horse Show events continue on Saturday with the Open Horse Show. A full week for the fair begins Monday with the Dog and Cat Shows (not scheduled for the same time!). Tuesday, a sneak-peek Reveal Party provides results for the Shooting Sports and 4-H General Indoor judging to be presented during a short window to help alleviate the suspense for the 4-H exhibitors, parents and the public. Wednesday is a full day of intake for all Open Indoor exhibits. Then the exhibit halls become closed judging grounds on Thursday. Swine and Sheep Shows are scheduled for that day with the exhibit halls being open to the public that evening.

Fair books are out for the public in Rangely at Rangely Conoco, Rangely True Value Hardware, Rangely Bank of the San Juans, Rangely Chamber of Commerce, Nichols Market and White River Market. Also in Meeker at Watt’s Ranch Market, Meeker General Mercantile, GoFer (Meeker), White River Convenience, Meeker Bank of the San Juans and Mountain Valley Bank.

Both CSU Extension offices have books along with the entry tags for Indoor Open exhibits.

And, yes it’s true. Ed Coryell has decided to retire from the Fair Board. But his heart wants to continue to volunteer where he can. Such passion is being recognized throughout this year’s fair. The entire Rio Blanco County community wishes Ed many relaxing moments at the 2024 fair!
