Kurt Douglas, a man of many talents
RANGELY I With winter sports well underway, who knows more about the operations and work involved than long-time teacher, coach and athletic director Kurt Douglas. He taught for 32 years, coached for 27 and served as the athletic director for approximately eight years.
Lady Cowboys split games
MEEKER I The Lady Cowboys opened the 2011 part of the season with a new coach and two games on the road last weekend, losing the first in Hayden before winning in Vail. Meeker will play in Collbran Friday and host Paonia Saturday afternoon.
RBC high school sports get under way
RBC I The Meeker High School wrestling team will open the 2011 portion of the season tonight at home, with a dual against Coal Ridge, starting at 6 p.m., while the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will wait until Friday before taking the court.
Henderson named girls’ head coach
MEEKER I The Meeker Board of Education accepted the resignation of girls’ basketball coach Neil Joy at a special meeting Dec. 29 and named Deb Henderson the new coach at its regular board meeting Jan. 4.
LeBlanc wins in Reno, ranked No. 1 nationally
MEEKER I Former Meeker Cowboy and current University of Wyoming Cowboy Joe LeBlanc won the Reno Tournament last weekend in Nevada and helped his team win the team championship, a first for the Cowboys.
Lady Cowboys take two on road trip
MEEKER I The head basketball coach for the Lady Cowboys was still on administrative leave when the team bus left Meeker last Friday for the south-central part of the state for two non-league games.
Panther wrestlers exceed expectations
RANGELY I With the pre-holiday part of the schedule completed, first-year wrestling coach Derek Stolworthy is pleased with his team’s progress and says his young team is “exceeding expectations.”
Crawford takes second place at Kremmling
MEEKER I Six Cowboy wrestlers competed in the annual West Grand Invitational in Kremmling last Saturday and four returned with medals, including a silver for JR Crawford.
Panthers shut out in Shootout
RANGELY I “We had a tough matchup right out of the gate,” Rangely boys’ basketball coach Eric Hejl said of the first round of the White River Electric Cowboy Shootout. The Rangely boys’ team opened the season against the 3A Grand Valley Cardinals and lost 53-28.
