MEEKER | Last week, the Meeker Cowboys softball team played Eagle Valley for homecoming. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Cowboys lost 6-5 in 11 innings. The second game saw another loss, 18-14. The Cowboys have struggled in recent matchups against Eagle Valley. However, in the second game, a few players stepped up for the team. Senior Miah Wren scored a run and stole five bases, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Fellow senior Miley Chism scored two runs, getting on base five out of eight times. Chism also contributed three runs, something that hadn’t happened for the Cowboys since August.
Senior Ashlynn Ducey also made key plays, scoring two runs and stealing two bases. She reached base three times out of six plate appearances.
Despite the losses, the Cowboys found some positives in their performance. They kept Eagle Valley’s batters in check, recording five strikeouts—beating Eagle Valley in that aspect of the game.
After Saturday’s matchups, the Cowboys’ record dropped to 9-11 for the season. However, they bounced back Monday, winning both games of their doubleheader against Battle Mountain. The Cowboys took the first game 30-8 and the second 28-13, finishing the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and 7-5 in conference play.
The Cowboys now await the weekend results to see if they will advance to the state tournament, which features 16 teams and 32 games, scheduled for Oct. 18-19.
