Cowboys fall in state quarterfinals to end season with an 8-3 record

MEEKER |  The No. 7 Meeker Cowboys football team saw its season come to a close Saturday afternoon after falling to No. 2 Forge Christian Fury in the 1A Colorado State Football Playoffs.

Heading into the matchup, the Cowboys had been red-hot offensively, scoring no fewer than 31 points in their previous seven games. However, the Fury defense proved too tough for Meeker’s offense to overcome them.

“We ran into a good team yesterday,” head coach Andy Coryell said. “We got a turnover early but couldn’t sustain drives like we wanted. They did a good job of scoring right before the half to go up three scores, and that forced us to play a little differently than we would have liked.”

The loss snapped Meeker’s eight-game winning streak and ended their season with an 8-3 record. Despite the outcome, the Cowboys had an impressive run, capturing the 1A Western Slope League championship during the regular season.

Head Coach Andy Coryell talked about what his message was to the team in the locker room following the loss.

“This was a special group,” Coryell said. “I’m really proud of how the kids competed, not just today but the whole season. That’s a reflection of those six seniors and the impact they’ve had on the program for the last four years.”

The Cowboys will bid farewell to six seniors graduating in the spring of 2025. “To the magnificent six, congratulations on graduating, and thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into this program you guys will be missed.”

As the Cowboys look ahead to next season, optimism abounds. The team’s younger players showed growth this year, and the foundation is in place for another strong campaign in 2025.

Congratulations to the Meeker Cowboys on a remarkable season.
