MHS golf team does well in 2A division at Cobble Creek, Black Canyon and Tiara Rado

MEEKER | The Meeker Cowboys golf team had a busy schedule last week, participating in the Cobble Creek tournament on Wednesday and the Black Canyon tournament on Thursday. On Monday, they competed in the Tiara Rado tournament.

In the Cobble Creek tournament, the Cowboys placed 10th out of 14 teams and secured second place in the 2A division. Leading the Cowboys in scoring was senior Wil Schwartz, who shot an 81, followed by Bryson Elam with a 77, Alejandro Garcia and Drew Drake both with 98, and Jacob Roberts with 110. Head coach Willy Theos praised freshman Bryson Elam’s performance, saying, “Bryson tied for 10th out of 79 with a score of 77, which is his lowest score ever.”

The following day at the Black Canyon tournament, the Cowboys finished 9th out of 16 teams and again took second place in the 2A division, with a team score of 252.

“We didn’t finish our rounds as well as I hoped. Not making mistakes at the end is difficult but something we can improve on,” Theos said.

In Monday’s Tiara Rado tournament, the Cowboys placed 7th overall as a team and claimed first place in the 2A division with a team score of 267. Senior Wil Schwartz led the scoring with an 81, followed by Sam Hightower with 91, Alejandro Garcia with 97, Bryson Elam with 95, and Kaden Ridgway with 109.

Schwartz tied for 11th place out of 81 golfers in the tournament. As the Cowboys continue their season, Theos commended his team for their dedication and work ethic.

“I see our athletes at the range outside of regular practice times often,” Theos said. “They put in the work to get better, and it shows.”

Looking ahead, the Cowboys will be playing in the Vail Golf Club tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and the Black Canyon JV tournament on Thursday, Sept. 5.
