MEEKER | The Cowboys brought three players to represent the team: seniors Wil Schwartz and Montey Franklin, and freshman Bryson Elam. This marked the first time the Cowboys competed both individually and as a team.
Last week, the team focused on their short game, as many strokes occur within 100 yards. They practiced chipping and putting, with head coach Willy Theos winning one of those practice rounds on Friday.
Theos also shared the team’s mindset heading into the state tournament. “We are just focusing on where each person is shot by shot and doing the best that they can there.”
In the first round on Monday, Schwartz shot an 87, and in the second round on Tuesday, he improved with an 81, giving him an overall score of 168, which placed him 17th. Franklin placed 41st, shooting a 90 in both rounds for a total score of 180. Elam placed 50th, shooting a 94 in the first round and an 89 in the second for an overall score of 183.
“Monty’s grown, and I think he’s grown in the mental part of his game. Wil’s got a really strong game, and he is just focusing on those small details and getting better at handling those kinds of things. Bryson has grown in the fact that he may not have had a great round last weekend, but now he’s so happy about being here, and he’s ready to perform and show what he can do,” Theos said.
“I am incredibly proud of them. They deserve to be there.”
The Cowboys placed 10th overall in the state tournament, competing against 13 other teams. Their team score was 271 in the first round and 260 in the second, for a combined score of 531.
