Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 75 years ago
Feb. 28, 1935
• Prominent lower White River rancher James Delaney was killed in a runaway accident last weekend. It was surmised he was dragged by his team of horses and died from his injuries. The accident occurred Saturday or Sunday. His body was found Wednesday morning in a wash a mile or so from his home.
• Student government is new in the grade school this year. Marilyn Oldland is president; Betty Dunn, secretary.
• Safeway: Big annual Colorado produced food event.

Feb. 25, 1960
• Attendance for the second annual cutter races was very good in spite of raw weather.
• The WREA crews have been cutting several cottonwood trees at the L.T. Steele residence on Garfield this week. They are getting ready to put up another mercury vapor street light on that corner.
• Pat Sheridan and Jerry Seely qualified for the state wrestling meet in 138 and 180 lb. classes under the tutelage of Coach Paul Starbuck.

Feb. 22, 1990
• Meeker wrestled its way to its second state wrestling title, including three individual championships for Scott Williams, J.C. Watt and Willy Theos.
• The RE-1 school board voted unanimously to proceed with a 4-day school week beginning this fall.
• Renae Neilson announced her candidacy for Rio Blanco County Assessor.
• Celebrating his first birthday Feb. 16: Jason Paul Purkey, son of Barbie and Jay Purkey of Meeker.

Feb. 25, 1960
• The chamber of commerce banquet attracted more than 100 attendees.
• Marva Oaks and William T. Fleming were married in a double ring ceremony Feb. 10. Carol Joan Akers of Rangely, wed Almer L. Hazlewood, also of Rangely.

Feb. 28, 1980
• Rangely High School students Jeff Mitchem, Brian Mitchem and Pete Etcheverry, placed second among all participating teams in Colorado in the 13th annual Model Bridge Contest held in Denver.
• At the Campus Theatre, Blake Edwards’ “10” starring Bo Derek’ “Starting Over” with Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen.
• Ila Dawn Pennell has been accepted for September 1980 admission to International Fine Arts College in Miami, Fla. where she will study fashion merchandising.

Feb. 22, 1990
• Donald Polley retired from the Rangely Sanitation District Waste Water Plant where he had served as operator since 1975.
• The positions of county budget director and county planner have yet to be filled.
• Robbie Morgan of Cub Scout Pack #189 earned the Arrow of Light award.
• “Everyone counts in 1990 census.”
