MEEKER I On May 20, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) maintenance crews reported the failure of a downhill Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall on southbound State Highway 13 at mile marker 29, causing the roadway to sag up to five feet in the area adjacent to the wall.

RBC I The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor partner, Elam Construction, Inc., will began work Tuesday, weather permitting, on resurfacing State Highway 13 in two locations:

Highway 13 crash traps pregnant woman; mother, baby doing well

On Friday afternoon, about 5 miles south of Meeker on Highway 13, Andrew Lawrence, 24, of Meeker and his 24-year-old wife, Brittany Walsh, who was driving in slushy and wet roads, drove off Highway 13, rolling to a stop at the bottom of a steep ravine. Lawrence was unhurt, but Walsh was trapped in the SUV and had to be extricated. She was taken to Meeker’s Pioneers Medical Center then airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Walsh, in her eighth month of pregnancy, gave birth to Scarlett Rose Lawrence, who weighed 5 pounds and 10 ounces. Mother and daughter are reported to be doing fine and are in good shape. MEEKER I On Friday at about 3 p.m., a rainy and slushy spring storm asserted itself, allegedly causing a medium-sized SUV to leave the road and roll over into a deep ravine on the side of Highway 13, just south of Meeker. Of the two occupants, a pregnant woman was trapped in the vehicle.

Slow speed zones fail to reduce wildlife collisions

It pays to be over-attentive when driving, as the driver of this Rangely truck learned recently. The vehicle sustained serious damage in a wildlife-related accident. The state has indicated that Highway 64 between Meeker and Rangely and state Highway 13 between Rifle and Craig are among the top five highways in the state for the number of accidents between vehicles and wildlife.

RBC I Until the last couple of months, travelers on State Highway 13 between Meeker and Rifle were well-versed with the wildlife crossing zone mandating slower speeds at night during the fall and winter months.
