BMS girls finish track season with a bang in Wyoming

MEEKER I The Meeker seventh- and eighth-grade tracksters finished their season with a bang, winning the combined girls’ division, topping 10 other teams Saturday in Baggs, Wyo.
Not only did they win the meet, the girls combined to break two records and win several individual events.
The seventh-grade team of Kassie and Krissy Luce, Gracie Bradfield and Megan Shelton combined to not only win both the 4×100-meter and 800-meter medley relay, they also broke the school record in both events.
The seventh-grade 4×200-meter relay team was second and the eighth-grade girls were third.
The boys’ relay teams also showed improvement as the eighth-grade team finished second in the medley relay, third in the 4×400 relay, fourth in the 4×200 relay, and fifth in the 4×100 relay.
The seventh-grade boys were fifth in the 4×200 relay.
Once again all levels were combined in every event.
“This meet was called the best of the best, awarding medals to the top three overall males and females in each event,” said coach Heather Burke.
It was a great accomplishment to medal in this meet and the Meeker kids did it several times.
In the individual events for the girls, Avery Watt led the way for the meet champions winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.55, and the 200-meter hurdles. She also was on the relay team that was second and placed fifth in the 100-meter dash.
Megan Shelton won the shot put with a throw of 24-1 and she was involved in both relays. Sierra Williams was second in the 400-meter dash with a gutsy 67.93, and finished fifth in the 200-meter dash, along with anchoring the eighth grade relay teams.
Gracie Bradfield was second in the 200 dash. Krissie Luce was third in the 200-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Kassie Luce was fourth in the 200 dash.
Riley Pertile was sixth in the discus and several Meeker girls set personal bests in this meet.
Winning a meet this size was an outstanding team achievement, one indicative of great coaching and hard-working kids.
The boys also had a great meet, placing third overall and getting several personal bests and reaching personal goals set for the season.
Jarrick Garza was second in the high jump with a jump of 5-2. Doak Mantle was second in the 200 hurdles and was a member of the relay teams. Logan Hughes was fourth in the triple jump with an impressive jump of 33-5 and he was sixth in the long jump and a member of a relay team.
Gavin Garr was fifth in the 400 dash while Eli Hanks was sixth in the shot put and a member of the relay team. Kale Burke broke the 6 minute mark in the mile, and his cousin, Pake Burke, broke the 2 minute mark in the 800-meter run.
Overall, the meet was a huge success for the Cowboys. “We had a lot of fun in our last meet. The weather was nice and the kids did a great job,” Burke said.
The meet ended the season on a positive note and leaves the kids excited about next year’s season.
